Nestled between North & South Twin Lakes
Established in 1918.
L. Thompson and Harry Harty christened the area “Pinehurst” in 1916.
In 1917, Knut Lindstrom began building a dining hall and a few small cabins on South Twin Lake. His dream was to build a fine resort called Pinehurst between the two lakes. He bought 15 boats from Detroit Boat Works. Later that year the pavilion burned to the ground.
In 1918, Lindstrom built the octagon round house that is the main lodge today. He hired Native Americans from the village of Naytahwaush to build it. Lacking the funds to continue, he began having Pow Wows and movies in the lodge.
In 1924, Ernie Miller purchased the resort and began making improvements. He retired in 1944 and his daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Vic Dalness took over. Ernie died suddenly in 1945. The eight Miller children inherited the resort. Susie Dalness, Emma Olson, Mary Jane Estey, and Charles Miller bought out the other four children.
In 1959, Howard and Ruby LaVoy purchased the resort and Richard and Audrey (Babe) LaVoy managed it. They had a extremely strong work ethic. Each day, they hauled boats, fixed up cabins, kept up on laundry, cleaning, and mowing.
In 1969, Dick and Babe bought the resort from his parents and began to make more and more improvements to the main lodge. Including,
1969 – They moved the bar to the middle of the resort.
1972 – The store was added to the East, as well as the dining room.
1979 – The West Bar was completed.
In 1982, Greg and Julie LaVoy moved home to work at the resort. They purchased Pinehurst Resort from Dick and Babe in 2000. Greg and Julie have kept up the tradition of hard work with a strong family center that makes Pinehurst what it is today. They continue to make improvement to the cabins, lodge, and the grounds of the resort. The lodge received a big facelift in 2005, adding knotty pine to the interior and new siding on the exterior. They also replaced some cabins with duplexes that accommodate larger parties. The resort expanded from 33 beds to 70 beds.
In 2018, Pinehurst Resort celebrated 100 years of business. The LaVoy family added a beautiful patio with outdoor seating for dining and a sand volleyball court. Today, Greg and Julie’s son Andy LaVoy and their Son-in-law, Ben Baumann are learning the ropes to someday take over this family gem.
